L'Historique du Berger Belge
The de l'Assa kennel was first noticed about 1954-55 because of an excellently typed male, with strong well-made legs, good contstruction, but a head lacking a little in elegance: Cesar de l'Assa. This dog won many CAC's and CACIB's during the 8 years when he was regularly shown. His value as a stud assured the worth of his descendants and he created the sucess of the extremely large l'Assa kennel, which has some excellent products, but its overall production was irregular. It never really created a familial, stable and homogenous type of the same quality created by the Malinois kennels before the war.
This remark does not diminish the worth of the l'Assa kennel, whose name is well-known beyond the boundaries of Belgium and who, after ten years continues to distinguish itself in the shows. But I believe a smaller production would have permitted greater homogeneity. It is also necessary to mention that very poor stock survived the war. The high quality of the Jolimont, Ecaillon, etc kennels had disappeared and was very difficult to regain. L'Assa kennel has certainly not finished improving the line created by Cesar.
The kennel repeatedly made some consanguine unions between the descendants of Cesar and it is still too soon to judge the influence that they will have on the future of the variety. BBA p57&58
