Before presenting us with 5 lovely puppies Phoebe won:

Phoebe was the top winning puppy in the breed 1987. Like all our dogs she has a fabulous temperament, has been character assessed, hip scored and works.

I chose my affix - Charbonny - as it's partly my name and is also the French word used to describe a Tervueren's markings. After two successive matings of each variety (3 of which became Champions) I went into partnership with Pat Amos. We're probably best known for breeding 'middle of the road' dogs - dogs that win under both breed specialists and all-rounders and we're more than happy to have this reputation. Although I actually prefer more hyper typical heads to look at, when breeding we aim to balance construction and type without loosing character or working ability. I tend to rush around enthusing over the latest puppy or import and Pat is very much calmer than me taking everything in her stride. We always agree on a dog when breeding. Without Pat I would have done some 'dicey' matings. I'm happy to have been in the breed long enough to know dog breeding, often for several generations so will often use older dogs at stud. Before we breed from one of our bitches, she has to have won well in the show or working ring and have good hips, eyes and character. We set our own standards but still make mistakes. Although we live miles apart, Pat and I see alot of each other and are best friends as well which definitely helps in a good partnership, both having other interests besides dogs. On the whole we like the same dogs - and love dogs of character.
Pat has kept the Charbonny flag flying in recent years whilst I changed careers - I teach now - and I moved to Oxford with children and dogs. Now settled there with a wonderfully supportive new man in my life, I look set to get to more shows and add another doggy edition to the family.
