Owner's comments: Nik is the third Tervuren to go Best in Show. He is the youngest Best in Show and the first to take Canadian honors. Nik's outgoing temperament and natural showmanship have resulted in a show career which is remarkable for his young age. By two years and two months, Nik had won Winners Dog at the Belgian Sheepdog Club of Canada Specialty, Best of Winners at the ABTC first Specialty, Best of Breed at the Midwest supported show, and had placed in the Group in both the US and Canada: and had gone Best in Show. Nik was undefeated in US class competiton since purchase at one year. He finished his Canadian championship in four straight shows. Nik's combination of Breed type, color, movement, elegance and lovable temperament make him what he is - a loved famly pet that happens to go to dog shows.

Nik is the top winning Tervuren of all time - he earned over one hundred Bests of Breed, 63 Working Group placements, 1 Independent Specialty BEST IN SHOW and 6 all-breed BESTS IN SHOW. Nik is Kennel Review #1 Belgian Tervuren for 1974, 1975 and 1976. Nik took Best of Breed over record entries at the ABTC National Specialty Shows in 1974, 1975 and 1976. He is both an American and Canadian National Specialty winner and an American and Canadian BEST IN SHOW winner. Nik earned Bests in Show in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and took his 6th all-breed Best in Show on Nov. 28, 1976. With all of Nik's honors and records, his most unusual wins will always be two consecutive Bests in Show on May 26 (one in Canada, one in the US)...on my birthday. It is a rare dog that gives his owner such a birthday present - Nik IS that rare dog. Nik, OFA BT-73, is always owner/handled...he is my constant pet and companion. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to display and live with a great dog.

The Cover Story
Nik has earned the honor of being the first Tervuren featured on the cover of a Pictorial. Why? Because when he won the 1976 National Specialty, Nik retired the ABTC rotating BOB trophy. The requirements were that the same owner must win the trophy 3 times, not necessarily with the same dog. Nik did it the "easy" way and won in himself by going Best of Breed three years in a row (1974, 1975, 1976). Nik started his Specialty wins by going Best of Winners in 1973 to finish his Championship, undefeated in dog classes. Anyone who's been around Tervuren even a short while knows Nik is the winningest Tervuren we've ever had, with multiple group placings and 6 Bests in Show. But that's not the whole story. Nik, in true working dog spirit, placed in his class for all three legs while getting his obedience degree. He's proving a consistent producer and now has 14 champion offspring, group placing dogs among them, and several more with major points. He's tolerant of youngsters even when they don't show him respect, sleeps where HE chooses (floor or bed), hams it up whenever he knows he's the center of attention (and sometimes when he's not!), is not always the model of behavior in the show ring (which just proves that he's a real dog after all). Most importantly, Nik is a Friend, Protector and Companion to his mistress Judy Smith. A truly all-around Tervuren.
